Famous Aurorans

What's in a name?
Aurora is the Roman name for Eos, the Greek Goddess of the dawn. When a post office was established here, the first name chosen was Waubonsie, after the Potawatomi chief (shown at right); however, there already was a post office by that name in Illinois. Many local settlers were from New York State, and it is said that the town was named for East Aurora, New York (Other nearby towns, such as Batavia, Oswego, and Montgomery, also bear New York state names). Another theory is that "Aurora" was adopted because it is a transliteration of Waubonsie, which means "early dawn".

Other Auroras can be found in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Iowa (2), Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wisconsin(2). There is also one in Brazil; Ontario, Canada; and six in Mexico!
